Evening was always the busiest time of the day, because everyone in the Weyr was usually awake. And suppertime (breakfast for the Night Watch) is when Nyche really got out to get up to no good. Seizing the moment, she gathers a group of riders around her table.
"All right," says Nyche, the grin on her face wide as she fiddles with a few Marks, "here's the aim of the game: you gotta guess how many eggs are gonna be in the Queen's clutch. I'll mark down your bets on this here clay tablet, and then we'll all see what pays out on Laying day? So, gentlemen, let's bet."
Marks begin to change hands. Nyche was known to be trustworthy with betting Marks, at least until after winnings were handed out. And that's why, every Hatching, she usually walked away with a fair amount of extra coin in her pockets.
And all the extra cloth and tailor-made robes one can get would soon be hers!

They say it’s bad form to bet on a hatching you plan to stand in, but that’s one tradition Zayin doesn’t abide by. She’s summoned to the table by a rider friend, and comes eagerly, marks weighing down her pockets. Sliding into an empty seat, she asks, “Has it already started?” Hopefully she’s not late to the party. She’s far better at guessing who will impress what, or how many of a color there’ll be, but she’s still willing to bet on how many eggs .Why not.

Needless to say, R'lar is not a fan of Nyche, but when money's involved, he'll put those differences aside. Or, at least, he'll keep the disgusted sneers and the snarky comments to a minimum. He sits silently at his end of the table, watching the others prepare to place bets. He'll wait till a few have laid down their marks, see what the majority are guessing.

F'nell adored gambling, and when he heard that people were starting to be on how many eggs there'd be, he had headed over, a handful of marks in his pocket. He never bet much on a single thing, preferring to bet small marks on a variety of things, so that he would at least get something back, and this was what he had allotted for clutch size.
Twenty one eggs, his dragon said. And one a gold.
Well, if that was what his dragon thought, it was good enough for him. He strode up to the table, tossing a pair of five marks down. "I'll put 2 marks on there being 21 eggs, and 2 marks on there being a queen." The rest of the colors he would bet on after the clutch was laid.

Nyche grins up at Zayin. "Never too late," she says and then gives Rlar a cheeky grin. "Care to place a bet, Smiley?"
Though the first to actually bet is F'nell. She scribbles down his name on the clay, then holds out a pouch. "All right, that's two for 21 eggs and two for a queen egg. And here's to hoping there's a queen, because we can't survive in this pass without lots of dragons! To the Weyrleader and Woman, and may their dragons bring our Weyr to glory!" She raises her mug of klah in honor of Tyrella and N'kem.

She's on time. Very well. Zayin isn't one for taking exhorbitant chances, but a little risk never hurt anyone, right? She slips three marks from her pocket. "I'll lay two marks on 16 eggs, and another that there won't be a Queen."

Another aggravating nickname, but he can't bring himself to be bothered by it, not when there's money to be made. R'lar had planned to hang back, but he can't help but step in as a young woman places a bit on a ridiculously low number, as well as there being no queen.
"You're low-balling this," he snorts, and pulls ten marks from his pocket. "Five on there being 20 eggs- and there might yet be more than that- and another five that there'll be a Queen." He's not sure if there'll be two queens, even, but that's a riskier bet.

He was pleased to see that he wasn't the only one to think that Mareth was going to lay a queen egg, and when Nyche raised her mug, he raised his as well. "We can only hope."
With his bet made, he headed off. He had nothing else to bet on at the moment, and there would betting going on until now until the hatchlings impressed.
