Maika threw herself on the bed, curling the pillow around her head and letting the tears go. She couldn't believe it. All those eggs and not a single one even looked twice at her... She wanted to Impress, but she knew she couldn't do anything to make it happen.
__________
Ik'tamal sighed, limping toward the candidates barracks. Azurath had decided to stay behind in Ik'tamal's weyr, seeing as the candidate barracks weren't big enough for the Purple. He stopped outside the door to the girls barracks, strangely nervous. He could hear muffled crying from the other side of the door. His sister... He knew how she felt. The disappointment that came with the knowledge that you hadn't Impressed, and then wondering if it was something you did that caused it...
He knocked on the door, opening it slowly, and wasn't surprised to see only his little sister inside. He limped over to her, his wooden leg making thumping noises on the floor. He sat down on the other side of the bed, rubbing a hand on her back in a comforting way that reminded her of her brother. He waited until she cried herself out, the same way he had in the past when she'd hurt herself on something.
Maika sat up slowly, rubbing her hands on her eyes. She looked at Ik'tamal, eyes still watery, and threw her arms around his neck. "Ik'tamal... I'm sorry!" she said after a moment. "I... I shouldn't have come... I should've stayed home..."
"That doesn't matter any more sis," Ik'tamal said after a moment. "You're here. They're not going to send you back to Garnet Hold just because you're a little too young to be a Candidate. You may be thirteen Turns old, but you've had to act older... It's because I left, isn't it?"
"Ever since you left, mother and father have been more reliant on me..." she admitted. "Although, since the first Fall, they've been even more careful. They didn't want me going outside when there was a Fall nearby... I mean, they were even worse when I told them what happened..." She let go of her brother and wiped her face with her sleeves. She smiled slightly through the tears. "It's good to see you again big brother. I missed you."
Ik'tamal put a hand on Maika's head, smiling slightly. It was a rare sight, his smile, but Maika had always been able to get one out of him somehow. "I know that now... And... I'll admit that I missed you too."
